The History of Hawaiian Music

The History of Hawaiian Music from it's earliest roots to it's contemporary evolution to the present time. Includes an overview of Hawaiian culture, Hawaiian artists and Hawaiian instruments. Hawaiian Music is native to the Hawaiian Islands of the United States of America. The History of Hawaiian Musical Styles include; Hula Music, Luau Music, "Native Hawaiian ritualized Dance", Mele "Hawaiian Chanting", Jawaiian "Hawaiian Reggae Music" and Paniolo, or "Hawaiian Country". The three most predominant Hawaiian instruments used in both early and modern day Hawaiian Music performances are the "Steel Guitar", "Slack-key Guitar" and the "Hawaiian tenor Ukulele".

Ancient Hawaiian Culture

The History of Hawaii's Music began with the earliest of traditional and ancient Hawaiian musical instruments which were primariliy were made from shells, stones, plants and trees and included the; Ipu (Hawaiian gourd drum), Ili''ili (two flat stones clicked together), Ohe hanu inu (Hawaiian wooden nose flute), Pu ohe (Hawaiian bamboo trumpet), Puili (slit sticks made from bamboo stalks) and large Conch shells gathered from the ocean that produced deep and resonant sounds when blown. The written history of Hawaiian Music dates it's origins back to the early 1800's during the reign of Hawaii's King Kamehameha III. Documentation of Hawaiian Music history indicates that when the King of Hawaii brought Mexican cowboys (known as vaqueros) to the Hawaiian islands to teach Hawaiian's how to manage their cattle overpopulation issues in 1832, the cowboys free time guitar playing caught on with local Hawaiian ranchers. Over time Hawaiian's loosened or slackened the strings of their guitars giving birth to the now famous Hawaiian instrument known as the "Slack Key Guitar". This instrumental modification gave the Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar a rich and uniquly Hawaiian musical flavor. Hawaiians changed the tuning of the guitar to adapt it to their traditional Hawaiian songs and chants. The Slack Key Guitar was popularized in the 20th century by Hawaiian recording artist; "Gabby Pahinui", who is known by many in the islands as the father of Traditional Hawaiian Music. Other Hawaiian instruments to evolve after the Slack Key Guitar were the "Hawaiian Steel Guitar" and the "Hawaiian Ukulele".

Contemporary Hawaiian and Luau Music Artists

Today's more "Contemporary Hawaiian and Luau Music" includes a blend of various ethnic traditions including; Hawaiian Rock, Pop, Soul and Jawaiian Reggae Music. Popular Hawaiian Artists who combine the best of Contemporary Hawaiian, "Hula Music", "Luau Music" and "Traditional Hawaiian Songs" include; "The Brothers Cazimero" international Hawaiian recording Artist "Don Ho", and "Israel Kamakawiwo'ole" or "IZ" as he was affectionately called. Hawaiian music is a genesis of many years of acculturation and a synthesis of it's ancient to contemporary cultures and sounds. Its history is as diverse as the history of its peoples. Hawaiians not only incorporated the diverse music and instruments introduced to the islands, they invested their own traditions, beliefs and culture into their songs and chants. As a result, the Hawaiians have given the world a unique and joyful reason to celebrate life through their music.
